Time to snuggle up

Winter is drawing in, but luckily we have a full range of insulating down and synthetic jackets in stock. From Rab to Montane, Peak Performance to Merrell, and not forgetting Berghaus and GoLite.

Of particular interest for the ladies is the stylish offering from Rab in the Microlite Down jacket - gone are the days of the Michelin Man look making this jacket ideal for crisp winter days about town. Of course it also packs down small and light to stuff in your rucksack for when the ground is crunchy and the air is fresh. For damp days at the crag the Montane Firefox jacket is superb, with a primaloft fill and water resistant outer layer to keep you comfortable during the typical British winter conditions.

For men again the Rab Neutrino Endurance down filled jacket is a classic with a water repellent finish and is available in a striking red or simple black. For something a bit different have a look at Peak Performances' offering in the Blacklight Down jacket: stylish narrow baffles make it great for every day wear while the PP name ensures a great quality product out on the hill. For those wet cold days we have the new totally waterproof Rab Microlight eVent down jacket, fantastic for Scottish winters when you just know you're going to get wet! Don't forget all this week it is free delivery at www.gear-zone.co.uk

New Ranges landing online now

Well winter is definitly drawing in and the new ranges are starting to land and we are working hard to show off our best ever range with better images and more detailed descriptions than ever before. This week we have had deliveries from some new brands which we are really psyched about. We have a new sunglasses brand called Sinner, they are a Dutch company with some really exciting designs. All the lenses are polycarbonate and they perfect for multi sports such as Skiing, biking, running but look great too. Oh, the best bit is they cost from only £20.00.
We also have had our first shipment from Rab and also Nike ACG. So we have some shiny new eVent waterproof jackets for men and ladies. We also have just received the new Garmin Dakota. I have been using the next model up in the range the Garmin Oregan 300 for a while now and its the easiest walking GPS I have ever used. The screen is clear, the maps are brilliant and the battery life is also good.

I am pleased to announce a new brand to the Gear-zone range. We are now stockists of Peak Performance which Scandinavia's biggest clothing label in "functional sportswear." So whats the big deal? Well Peak Performance is a premium mountain resort brand. Obviously Gear-zone is specialising in Peak's Mountain and Ski ranges but they also make awesome gear for Golf, training and running gear.

Look out for the Black light collection which we will be stocking as the weather gets more extreme. Black light is gear for the extremes. It is made to the highest quality and finishing and has the features you need but is not fussy.

Iodine banned for water purification by EU!

Important news about Purifying water.

After October 25th 2009 the EU is banning the sale of iodine droplets and tablets to purify drinking water. They are however considered still safe to use. The EU have insisted that the manufacturers comply with regulations on the biocides’ efficacy in scientific tests. Iodine is routinely used by the military and outdoor enthusiasts and is considered safe for short periods of use with the correct dosage. It was not recommended for long periods, pregnant women or those with Thyroid problems.

Chlorine tablets are still available for use, however it is recommended that you use the neutralizing tablets or the water tastes like a swimming pool. Alternatively you can filter your water using a pump such as the MSR Waterworks or the Katadyn pocket filter. The filters have a ceramic core which offer protection from the most commonly encountered culprits of tainted water. They filter out bacteria, protozoa and particles. The MSR filters have a carbon core to reduce the organic chemicals. You can filter up to 2000 litres with a filter.

There is another new gadget on the market which is the Steripen. This is really compact and light and use ultraviolet light to destroy bacteria. It purifies a litre in just ninety seconds.
